HARRIET TUBMAN THEATER
Run Time: approximately 45 minutes, talkback to follow each performance
Meet Tunde and Bola, nine years old, from Nigeria. Two girls sex-trafficked to London share with you their child’s-eye view of the journey they have taken, the people they have encountered and their strange ways, the air hostess who smiles so hard, the ‘bossman’ who talks in his sleep and the objects they have collected along the way.
“When we embrace our common humanity and stand up for the dignity of all people, we realize the vision of a world that is more caring and more just – a world free from slavery. That is the vision that inspired generations of abolitionists who have preceded us.” – Secretary John Kerry, Remarks at the Release of the 2014 Trafficking in Persons Report
Every year the United States Department of State releases a Trafficking in Persons (TIP) Report. The report details countries around the world and their compliance with anti-trafficking standards, assigning each country a rank and giving a detailed account of their efforts in the past year to combat human trafficking. Since 2004, the TIP Report has included a section in the beginning of the report honoring people as “Heroes Acting to End Modern Slavery.” This award has become more formalized over the years, and the awardees now come to the U.S.
The TIP Report Heroes Global Network aims to both publicize and connect the TIP Report Heroes. The resource itself is an incredible tool for educators, and for spreading awareness. The website is found at Tipaward.com.
