Join us March 24 at 7p.m. for the sneak preview of Civil War: The Untold Story, a new documentary series that airs nationwide on public television this April. The Freedom Center will premiere Episode 2: A Beacon of Hope, which focuses on the actions of enslaved people to find freedom prior to Lincoln's Emcancipation Proclamation. It also tells the story of Cincinnati kid John Cockerill, who is separated from his father in the Battle of Shiloh, but demonstrates bravery in battles and goes on to be managing editor of the Cincinnati Enquirer.
As an introduction to the screening, historian Carl Westmoreland will also examine Cincinnati's crucial role in the war, and vocalist Devell Barnes will perform a medley of spirituals from the Underground Railroad era. The film screening will be followed by a Q&A with historians from the Freedom Center and filmmaker Chris Wheeler on why the Civil War matters today.
