On Sept. 20, 2013, cyclist Erick Cedeño visited the Freedom Center while cycling the Underground Railroad. The staff was touched by his passion for life and great spirit. He shared his inspiring story with us so that we could share it with all of you:
"I have traveled in the past 3 years around the country on my bicycle. In 2011, I completed a 2,100 mile solo-bicycle trip along the Pacific Coast Highway. In 2012, I traveled 1,500 miles along the Atlantic Coast from St. Augustine, FL to New York City, NY to see the history ...of the Civil War. This year, I wanted to do a bicycle trip from New Orleans, LA to Niagara Falls, NY along the Underground Railroad.
The idea came from my own ancestry and my quest for spiritual growth. I have met many people through my journey that have opened their home, fed me and provided water for me to continue my journey. Without them I would have not made it this far. When I was challenged with obstacles, I thought of the freedom seekers and the kind of hardship they went through to reach freedom, and it motivated me to continue. Everyday I learn new lessons from following the Underground Railroad.
After visiting the Freedom Center and learning more about the conductors of the Underground Railroad, it inspired me to continue my journey and be an eyewitness to history and to connect and follow in the footsteps of the previous freedom seekers and inspire others to keep the flame going through my actions."
