Rankin visitor's center being dedicated

The John Rankin House, located on a bluff overlooking the Ohio River and the village of Ripley, was home to the Rev. John Rankin. Rankin was a leading abolitionist and Underground Railroad conductor in the decades leading up to the Civil War.

According to site manager Betty Campbell, by Rankin’s own account, he and his family aided 2,000 fugitives from slavery on their road to freedom. First-hand accounts of Rankin and his family include stories of daring missions and struggles to make choices between the laws of the nation and their own morals.

The keynote speaker at the event will be Carl Westmoreland, senior historian of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center in Cincinnati. Campbell and Ohio History Connection Executive Director and CEO Burt Logan will also be part of the 2 p.m. program.

The entire site will be open free to the public from noon to 5 p.m.
