Freedom Center Choirs

Voices of Freedom Choir

The 100 members of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center's Voices of Freedom Choir represent men and women from many different backgrounds and professions and range in ages from 18 to 60. They reflect a medley of unique lives and experiences and are brought together by their love for singing and their faith in racial justice and freedom. Their incomparable voices are the common chord that unites to form the choral group led by Dr. Cathy Roma, Professor of Music at Wilmington College and Bishop Todd O'Neal, Senior Pastor for the House of Joy.

The Voices of Freedom Choir was established in 2002 for the Freedom Center's groundbreaking ceremony where they performed for 10,000 celebrants from throughout the region. Today, the choir performs at the home games of the Cincinnati Bengals, church ceremonies honoring World AIDS Day and Emancipation Day, state prisons, and sung for numerous worldwide telecasts and special events.

Becoming a member

You don't have to look long in the Voices of Freedom Choir loft to find people from almost every trade and profession in the community. You'll come across secretaries, physicians, homemakers, teachers, nurses and salesmen, to name a few. All share a tremendous gift for music coupled with a love and a desire to share it with others. Choir membership is open to all members and the community and no auditions are necessary. However choir members do dedicate a substantial amount of their time to rehearsing, touring and performing together—all without getting paid.

Freedom Center Ensemble

The Freedom Center Ensemble is new to the 2008-2009 season. Unlike the "Community Choir" applicants for the Ensemble must undergo a rigorous audition process. Prospective choir members must be members of National Underground Railroad Freedom Center; and live within 100 miles of downtown Cincinnati and be between the ages of 25 and 55. The Ensemble will travel extensively nationwide.

The Choir accepts applications for new singers June through July every year. Community Engagement Office staff and the Ensemble Directors review tapes to decide which singers they will invite to the final of the audition.
