Faith Outreach

People should not be surprised to find faith within the walls of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center.

Did you know that Harriet Tubman was known as the Moses of Her People? Did you know that a minister from a small Ohio town helped rescue more than 2,000 slaves? Did you know that the work of many abolitionist leaders was inspired by what Sojourner Truth called "the Divine presence?" And did you know that the signing of the Emancipation Proclamation on September 22, 1863 has historically been celebrated in a religious atmosphere?

Faith Outreach Programs bring the mission and message of the at the National Underground Railroad, as a "faith lead movement" to the doors of churches, temples and mosques. We invite you to visit online at faithtofreedom.org for a sample sermon, a guide to Points of Faith within the Freedom Center experience and other resources. Faith Outreach programs include:

  1. Search your Roots - The Freedom Center offers "free" assistance in conducting your family search. Organize a group, and we'll help you get organized right at your church.
  2. Be inspired by a Speaker - Each month over a dozen speakers talk to groups locally and nationally from Los Angeles to the local Cincinnati community.
  3. Host a Volunteer Drive - We offer something special for congregations during Black History Month so call ahead and sign-up to host a volunteer drive.
