Harriet Tubman’s Last Words: “Give my love to all the churches.”
Harriet Tubman was known as the Moses to her people. An escaped slave herself, Harriet Tubman led hundreds of slaves to freedom. She “acted as intelligence gatherer, refugee organizer, raid leader, nurse and fundraiser.” Her story is well chronicled in history books. However, did you know that Harriet Tubman was also a woman of great faith? Here is a passage from Harriet Tubman’s obituary that appeared in New York’s Auburn Citizen on Tuesday March 11, 1913:
To the clergyman she said “Give my love to all the churches” and after a severe coughing spell she blurted out in a thick voice this farewell passage which she had learned from Matthew: “I go away to prepare a place for you, and where I am ye may be also.” She soon afterward lapsed into a comatose condition and death came at 8:30…last evening.
