Getting your Genealogy answers
Thank you to all of our readers who sent in challenging requests for help in their genealogy search. Hopefully we have helped some of you and will be able to continue this service. To make our service flow more smoothly we could use your HELP. When you post a comment, will you be specific on what it is that you seek. For example: “I am seeking the father of Joe Johnson who was born in 1908 in Virginia.”
or “I am looking for my great grandmother Sally Stallworth who was a slave in Alabama.” This way we can get started in directing you to a good source of that information.

Searching my grandfather’s last name TRUDO, for over a year. As a child, he told me he was born in Rome, Italy, 1884. He emmigrated to New York USA(circa 1890-1909), but I can’t find anything under the name TRUDO, re immigrants from Italy. I have a photo of him taken in 1909 at Coney Island, NY. At the bottom of the photo he wrote his name, “John Baptist Trudo – Coney Island, NY 1909.” He moved to Daytona Beach, FL, and was a Barber there for over 40 years. He died in 1958, and is interred in Daytona Beach Mem. Cemetery, FL. I am trying to submit info about his life in Daytona to the Halifax Historical Musuem, and am not able to, until I can prove with paper work, that the info I have is true and factual, and relates to him. In searches, I have only found his name in a 1940 Census.
I would also like to find more info about his parents, but I am not sure if the name TRUDO was spelled differently in Rome, Italy. I have no idea at all, as to how to proceed any further with both of the above quests. Any suggestions would be most appreciative.
I might have some info on the Eldridge’s.

Been working on William James Whites family. Anything would help.
I am looking for my grandfather. My grandmother name is Ellia(Annie)White and my father name is Paul R. White lived in Pittsylvania County, Va. and the 1930 census shows she was a cook on a farm.
Dee Dee, I found the 1930 census entry. Upon further study, I learned that Annie was born in 1905 and first married at 14. Since her oldest child listed is only 6 I suspect there were 2 marriages. Also, the marital status entry is blurred. Is it widowed? Unmarried? My suggestion to you would be to contact the vital statistic office in Pittsylvania county to check on birth and death records. That should clear up the situation and perhaps give you the name you seek.
Wrong spelling. My Great Grandfather was Gastuv. Not Gustaf.
Margie, thanks for that information. My grandmother was never married. If so, I was wondering why did she keep the “white” last name and all the kids last name are “white”. She was born Ellia M. White in 1902. She died Ellia M. White in 1992. The 1930 census has her age off by a couple of years. I saw the marital status blurred as well and I know she was never a widow. I wish I could determine who fathered her 5 kids. She would stare into space when her kids asked who their father was. (sigh) She was a cook for a prominent family for over 40 years. Thanks for your assistance.
Dee Dee, I think there is more to be done. What was the time frame for the birth of the children? Did it coincide with her work at the family’s home? Obviously, there was a reason that she did not want to share the information. Have you located any birth certificates? Do you think that a member of the family for whom she worked could be the father?
I am searching for records of my grandfather Bert Guerra, Born in Rome Italy in 1884.Seems I’ve hit a road block. Would appreciate any information.
Brenda, using familysearch.org, I found an Albert Guerra born in 1884, living in Philadelphia in 1910. His wife is Carrie and child is Lucia. His immigration year is listed as 1887 meaning he came here as a small child. Is this your family?
I am looking for a old friend and all the information you have. His name is Harry j.Noble nickname [Butch] age 54 or 55 lived around Cinciniti Oh.
I am probably doing a different search. I am searching more for information than family members. My search is information regarding my great-great-great grandfather, Rev. Adam Poe. He lived in Cincinnati, Ohio from 1852 until his death in 1868. He was with the Methodist Episcopal church and worked for the Book Concern in Cincinnati. He was involved with Levi Coffin and Edward Harwood in a couple of organizations. These organizations were: The Contraband Relief Society, Western Freedmen’s Aid Commission (he was president) and the Freedmen’s Aid Society.
I had always wondered if Rev. Adam Poe was involved with the Underground Railroad in any way.
He was closely associated with Levi Coffin, the reputed president of the Underground Railroad, who also lived in Cincinnati at the same time.
Rev. Poe and Coffin were in the first two organizations that I mentioned above together. Also, I had found in the New York Times, through a google search, a newspaper article where Rev. Poe and Coffin went to Washington, D.C. to meet with President Lincoln in 1863 to establish a Freedmen’s Bureau on the National level.
The Cincinnati Historical Society found the following article for me and it did mention Rev. Poe’s involvement in helping fugitive slaves.
The Western Christian Advocate, Western Methodist Book Concern Number, Cincinnati, Wednesday, February 14, 1894. Page 123.
(Adam Poe) “was fearless in presenting his views, and in maintaining them. He thoroughly hated slavery, and many a poor fugitive from the South he helped to escape to a place of freedom. Slaveholders in pursuit of their runaway slaves never dared measure their strength with him, either in a personal contest or in the courts of law.”
Is there any information, books etc. at the Freedom Center that would have more information on people involved in the Underground Railroad, such as Adam Poe?
Thank you.
