How Do I Get Started?

Posted on July 23rd, 2009 by Margie Schwieterman

A question we frequently receive at the Family Search Center is “How do I get started doing my genealogy?” Unfortunately most of our visitors are here for such a short time that we can only skim the surface of what can be done and how best to do it. Here are a few suggestions for preparing to take the big step into the world of family history.

First ask yourself, “What do I already know?” The answer is “Probably more than you think.” If you will begin to write down your family members-you, your parents, your grandparents-, where they lived and when, you are already have a head start.

Next prepare to get organized. The more you stay consistent, the easier your later work will be. Forms that will be helpful can be found on www.genealogyseach.org/free/forms.html.

To be continued…….

I would like to trace my mother/grandmother’s heritage. I was born Rosella F. Cottrell but was adopted by my maternal grandparents thus changing my name to Martin. It’s the Woten side that I would like to know more about. My grandmothers/mothers father was Hugh Woten and I know that a sometime in her early life they lived in Winterset, Ia. I don’t know his middel initial, wife’s name, parent’s name or anything else. I’m not even sure there he or any of his family is buried. I do know some of my mother’s siblings names and there were 8 or 9 of them….Where would I start to find more history of this family? Rosella Mehling

I would like information any one may have on the Kish family. They came to the US from Hungry before WWI and lived in Fla. for awhile, then moved to Chicago. My grandmother’s name was Elizebeth Kish and married Marvin Bishop Smith of North Carolina. She died in 1929 from child birth. She had three children. B.C., Otto, and Celeste.
I am not sure of my grandmothers father’s name. I do know he returned to Hungry and opened a hotel in Budapest. Anyone having information please let me know.
