The Freedom Center will host a free screening of “Playground,” the shocking undercover documentary film on sex trafficking in America.
The 1 hour-25-minute film will be shown at 6 p.m. on March 11 in the Harriet Tubman Theater. The screening is free and open to the public, but seating is limited to the first 300 viewers.
“Playground” probes the hidden world of global sex trafficking through the sights and sounds of this sordid business as captured by filmmaker Libby Sears. Going undercover to infiltrate brothels in South Korea and Thailand, Spears interviewed victims, their pimps, and their abusers, mapped the trafficking routes of the sex tourism industry, and charted the commerce fueled by the purchase and sale of minors. What she was astonished to find, however, was the involvement of the United States and the degree to which elements in this country were influencing the global demand and growth of the sex trafficking industry.
Co-produced by George Clooney, Steven Soderbergh and Grant Heslov, “Playground” has received enthusiastic acclaim for its unforgettable examination of a subject that most people would prefer not to even mention.
“Playground is the best film I’ve seen on the abuse and exploitation of children,” writes Zoe Trodd of Harvard University. “It is both aesthetically sophisticated and politically committed. Nuanced and sensitive, it avoids the usual sensationalism surrounding this topic. This is the untold story of an American underworld.”
