Faith to Freedom Daily: Rev. B. W. Arnett
1838-1906
Fighting for black rights
Born a free man in Brownsville, PA in 1838, the young Arnett lost a leg to cancer. He taught school from 1859-1867, then became an African Methodist Episcopal (AME) minister, serving congregations in Toledo, Cincinnati, and Columbus. He was elected Bishop in 1888.
Always forceful in pushing for rights for blacks, Bishop Arnett was elected to the Ohio State Legislature, even though his district was largely white. In that position, he helped repeal the Black Laws of Ohio that severely limited freedom.
