Faith to Freedom Daily: Hannah and John Cox
Hannah 1797-1876
Strategically located station
These members of the Religious Society of Friends (Quakers) operated a thriving Underground Railroad station in Chester County, PA. Their home, “Longwood,” was well situated on the main road into Philadelphia. The Coxes found good use for the tunnel that connected their cellar to their barn. After sleeping in the cellar, where the Coxes kept cots and quilts, the runaways were fed and guided by Hannah to the tunnel. John was waiting at the other end to hide them in a wagon which he would drive to another station.
The Coxes often worked with Thomas Garrett in Delaware and William Still in Philadelphia.
