Freedom Without Walls – July 3rd, 2010

Posted on June 7th, 2010 by Chris McMahon

A section of the Berlin Wall is being permanently placed on a landscaped and lighted site near the main entrance of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. This gift from the City of Berlin to the City of Cincinnati is an enduring symbol of the triumph of freedom over oppression.

To celebrate this monument to freedom, the Freedom Center and the Munich Sister City Association of Greater Cincinnati are cosponsoring a dedication event on the evening of July 3rd, 2010.

I am so pleased to see the Freedom Center placing a section of the Berlin Wall at the Center. I feel it will make a wonderful addition. I was stationed in West Berlin from 1985 thourgh 1988. Had the rare and uniquie experience of being able to live in the divided city, 110 miles inside the Iron Curtain. The last outpost of freedom of the free world. Was there when President Reagan stood at the Brandenburg Gate and challenged Mr. Gorbechov, to “tear down this wall.” Even guarded Rudolf Hess at Spandau Prison, (the only man in the entire prison) before he died and the prison was leveled. Had the opportunity to visit the East Berlin side on a few occasions, and witnessed how different and difficlut life was living in Communism and fear. I even met a young man who actually did escape from East Berlin into West Berlin. I could go on and on and on, but, I just want to thank you again for bringing the section of the Wall to the Center. I will certainly visit. When President Clinton finally deactivated the BERLIN BRIGADE, it was a sad moment in history, as all of us who were stationed and served there, became just another part of a long and proud history to be forgotten.
    With respect,
