Faith to Freedom Daily: Calvary Baptist Church, Louisiana
A tireless pioneer, Bishop Joseph Willis founded this church on November 13, 1812 in Bayou Chicot, LA. The initial congregation was composed of five men and one woman, becoming the first free black Baptist church in the state. Willis extended his efforts to Cheyneyville on Bayou Boeuff in the Parish of Rapides where many of his Mississippi acquaintances had settled, and among whom were some of the Bayou Chicot members.
