Faith to Freedom Daily: Lucy Skipwith
In letters to John H. Cocke at Hopewell (VA) on 5/30/1858 from Lucy Skipwith—Hopewell (VA); my Dear Master, by this time I know that you are expecting a letter from me. but as mr. Carter, mr Crain, and Mr. Powell have all written to you from this place I have deferred writeing untell this preasant time we are glad to hear from you through mr Powell who is with us at this preasant time. and I am glad to say that he seems to be well pleased with the state of things here upon the plantation. every thing has gone on very smoothly since you went away. we are all in our usual state of health at present. Champion has been very sick but is not better. we were glad to hear that you were injoying a reasonable shear of health. the people are all delighted with Mr Crain. the people would not have him to leave hear for nothing. he is indeed a kind hearted good man. Albert sends his love to you and says that he thinks that God will bless you for getting such a man as Mr Crain to live here. the Chappel is in a much better state than it was when he took place. the people from all the plantations turns out most willingly to hear him and when he calls sinners to the Alter they comes in crouds. their has been several conversions since he took place.
