2008 Voices of the Future Conference

The 2008 Voices of the Future Conference was a great success. The one-day conference brought youth from across the region to learn, discuss, and become empowered to fight racism and injustice. The Youth Conference’s keynote speaker was Jeff Johnson. Mr. Johnson is a political motivator. He is a writer, political Strategist and keen cultural observer. During the first hour Mr. Westmoreland speaks with Joyce Coleman. Ms. Coleman and Mr. Westmoreland reflect on the importance of understanding whence you come in order to understand where you are going. Ms. Coleman is a volunteer who assists Freedom Center guests discover their histories in the Family Search Center at the John Parker Library. A FREE service offered by the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Ms. Coleman also is a key asset in the creation of the Negro Spiritual Festival and Reception, one component of the 7th Annual National Conference On The Underground Railroad.

During the second hour Mr. Westmoreland speaks with a recurring guest, Dr. Eric R. Jackson. Dr. Jackson is Associate Professor and Assistant Chair of the Department of History and Geography, Northern Kentucky University. Dr. Jackson reflects “History is a tool for positive, dramatic, spiritual, change because you need to know where you came from to know where you go.”

Dr. Jackson has also been an instrumental force in offering the 7th Annual National Conference On The Underground Railroad. The topic of this year’s conference is ‘Lincoln’s Era: The Role of Religion in the Underground Railroad’. The Conference will be held offering a variety of opportunities to learn about and experience history via many venues.
