National Underground Railroad Freedom Center Announces New Virtual Reality Experience Inspired by Civil Rights Icon Rosa Parks
‘The Rosa Parks Experience’ Opens to the Public September 24
CINCINNATI, OH – (September 15, 2016) The National Underground Railroad Freedom Center announced today the opening of a new virtual experience commemorating Civil Rights icon Rosa Parks’ historic demonstration, just four days before the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955—The Rosa Parks Experience. This immersive new virtual reality experience, designed by Möbius Virtual Foundry, was created to teach a new generation about the Civil Rights Movement from the first person perspective. Admission for The Rosa Parks Experience is $5.00.
Möbius Virtual Foundry is an experience design company focused on producing content for virtual reality (VR). In The Rosa Parks Experience visitors to the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center will wear Samsung Gear VR devices and sit on augmented bus seats, where they will see, hear and feel a virtual experience through the eyes of Rosa Parks.
“We are honored to be the new home of this unique experience,” says Dr. Michael Battle, executive vice president and provost of the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. “Visitors of all ages will get to experience Rosa Parks’ courageous act through her eyes and gain an in-depth understanding of the challenges and sacrifices of civil disobedience.”
“Museums invite us to learn, explore and discuss eras and events that have transformed communities, countries and generations," said John Pilkinton, co-founder and CEO of Möbius. "We can give people in the present a connection to people and experiences from the past by using VR to create virtual worlds that add layers of details and emotions. There is really nothing that can compare to the power of presence you feel in VR. If you haven’t tried it out, you should.”
The Rosa Parks Experience opens September 24, 2016 at the National Underground Railroad Freedom Center. Admission for The Rosa Parks Experience is $5.00. For more information, visit freedomcenter.org.
